The equation above describes the reaction process between aluminum oxide Al2O3 and sodium hydroxide NaOH to create sodium aluminate NaAlO2 and water H2O.
- Reaction conditions:
This reaction occurs under normal conditions, without the need for the presence of a catalyst or high temperature.
- Reaction process:
Aluminum oxide (Al2O3) is introduced into the sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solution. At that time, Al2O3 will react with NaOH to form sodium aluminate (NaAlO2) and H2O.
- Phenomena occurring:
The sodium aluminate (NaAlO2) product formed will not precipitate but dissolves in the solution. Therefore, if the reaction occurs in a solution, you will see the solution become cloudier, but no precipitate appears. On the other hand, if the reaction occurs in the air, you may notice the generation of steam.
