This equation describes the redox reaction process between potassium permanganate (KMnO4) and sulfuric acid (H2SO4), resulting in the formation of potassium sulfate (K2SO4), manganese sulfate (MnSO4), water (H2O), sulfur dioxide (SO2) and oxygen (O2).
- Reaction conditions
This reaction takes place in an acidic environment, at normal temperatures.
- Reaction process
In this reaction, KMnO4 reacts with H2SO4, under the adjustment of the catalyst, to produce K2SO4, MnSO4, H2O, SO2 and O2. In other words, KMnO4 is reduced from a +7 oxidation state to a +2 in MnSO4, while H2SO4 is oxidized from +6 to +4 in SO2.
- Phenomena occurring
When the reaction occurs, if carried out in a solution, the characteristic purple color of KMnO4 will disappear, indicating that KMnO4 has been reduced. In addition, SO2 and O2 gases will be released.
