Phenomena that occur
- When nitric acid (HNO3) reacts with copper sulfide (Cu2S), it produces a blue solid, copper(II) nitrate (Cu(NO3)2).
- At the same time, nitrogen monoxide (NO) gas is released, giving off a quite distinct smell.
- Water vapor (H2O) and sulfur dioxide (SO2) are also released in the form of steam. Sulfur dioxide (SO2) has a pungent smell and can irritate the respiratory tract.
