The chemical equation shown above represents the reaction process between potassium permanganate (KMnO4) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) to produce potassium hydroxide (KOH), manganese dioxide (MnO2), water (H2O) and oxygen (O2).
-
Reaction conditions: The reaction can take place at room temperature and does not require the presence of a catalyst.
-
Reaction process: During the reaction process, potassium permanganate and hydrogen peroxide interact with each other. KMnO4 is reduced from an oxidation state of +7 to +4, forming MnO2. H2O2 is also reduced, the oxidation state of oxygen increases from -1 to 0, forming O2. KMnO4 and H2O also react with each other to produce KOH and H2O.
-
Occurring phenomena: When the reaction occurs, the purple color of potassium permanganate disappears and turns into the brown-black color of manganese dioxide. At the same time, free oxygen gas is generated.
