ZnO Definition:
ZnO, also known as Zinc Oxide, is a molecular solid formed from one atom of zinc (Zn) and one atom of oxygen (O). The atomic mass of ZnO is 81.374 g/mol. ZnO does not exist as separate ions but its structure is an incomplete combination of zinc and oxygen atoms. -
Properties of ZnO:
2.1 Physical properties of ZnO: It is a white, odourless solid in the form of powder, non-melting with a neutral PH.
2.2 Chemical properties of ZnO: It is quite stable with most chemicals, reacts well with strong acid. -
Common chemical equations with ZnO:
ZnO does not react with metals, salts but it can react with strong acids like HCl, H2SO4 to form zinc salts and water. -
ZnO Synthesis:
4.1 Laboratory preparation of ZnO: Heating zinc in air will produce ZnO.
4.2 Industrial preparation of ZnO: Mainly from zinc ore, through the process of thermal decomposition, oxidation, and refining.
